CURRENT REPORTS for 2005 season
9-16-05
The abundance of daily
calls has dropped off significantly!!
As of this morning, here
in Southern Maryland, 4 species of cicadas are still calling off and on: T. chloromera, T. davisi, T. linnei, and T. auletes are calling intermediately during the day, with
increased calling activity for T. linnei and T. auletes up to dusk.

to the navel, and I saw a cicada to my surprise! I was so alarmed because I
didn't realize they were still around. I ran back inside to tell somebody and
they thought I was crazy, so I went back outside and it was gone. It could have
been the weather that day or something I don't know. I was shocked, I mean
shocked. So I went back in to find a book on cicadas, and now I read a chapter
every night before I go to bed. Do you think it's weird to have such an
interest in a bug? (NOT AT ALL!!)

Comments: I don't know if it
is because we are a NWF backyard habitat or what but we always have them and
this year it is ridiculous. They sing so
loudly you cannot sleep. I apologize for not having GPS coordinates. I have them somewhere as I am supposed to be
a wildlife mapper for the Commonwealth.

Cicada Activity: The cicadas chorus started in mid-July. Starts at sunset and goes through till just
before sunrise. They are so loud you can
barely hear the crickets in the background.
They are loudest on humid nights.
Tonight it is below 60 degrees and they are very quiet compared to the
previous very warm nights in August.
Comments: I was very
interested in the cicadas this year because they are so much louder than last
year (maybe it is the warmer weather?) Either way, it was nice to see a website
devoted to them - I actually love the sound they make although it appears they
are somewhat destructive. Now that I
have an idea what they look like I will report back if I see any.

Cicada Activity: I have
always enjoyed hearing them buzz in the trees. When I was little we use to tie
my mother's thread to them an let the fly around. We would also close them in the palm of our
hands and play like we had an electric shaver. I've seen on alot
of dead ones this summer on my carport.
Comments: I noticed hornets
flying with the Cicada in their grip. I
was worried about the hornets only to find out that they are Cicada killers and
are usually considered beneficial insects since they destroy plant feeding
cicadas. The hornet can be seen at: http://creatures.ifas.ufl.edu/beneficial/ck02.htm I did not see a place to upload my shots to
your site.

several cicadas just like the one at the top of this website. Our cats bring
them inside to play with them in large numbers. They are about the length of my
thumb and personally we find these insects disgusting. They slowly creap across the carpet!! However, the cats find them thoroughly
amusing, and they carry them in their mouths, wings flapping. Only a few of
them make noise, and I wonder if only the males make the noises? Only a few of
them make it out of the house alive as well!
