As of this morning here in Southern Maryland, Tibicen chloromera, T. davisi and T. lyricen are calling during the morning hours. Tibicen linnei and T. lyricen have been heard in the evening near dusk. Tibicen auletes is occasionally heard in the evening, but is noticeable absent from its normal calling abundance. Tibicen robinsoniana can be heard occasionally where it occurs locally, but is not abundant as the other species.

Describe cicadas activity:   I\'m not sure if these are annual or Periodicals but since mid-June they started singing.  You can hear the noise coming out of the woods day and night, very loud.  Last week I was walking with my neighbor and it was a dead one on the sidewalk.  Don't know how much longer they'll be around but the noise is starting to be too much, specially at night when you\'re trying to sleep.

Enjoyed a trip to Maryland’s lower Eastern Shore today to visit my friend Bill. It was amazing how many Tibicen latisfasciata we heard! They were the dominant cicada species calling during the day. Bill had also found 6 nymphs the night before on cedar trees at his church just a few miles away. He put them on the screens of his porch and they had eclosed and were darkening when we got there. That white stripe on each side of the abdomen is very striking. Bill was kind enough to let me take a few home and he released the remaining ones. Its amazing how this is one of the rarest cicadas in museum collections, yet they were everywhere in Somerset County, Maryland. We also heard the first known Eastern Shore record of Tibicen robinsoniana calling just south of Crisfield, MD. Other cicadas heard or collected on the lower Eastern Shore: T. lyricen, T. chloromera, T. auletes and T. davisi. We didn’t hear any Diceroprocta viridifascia but visited the habitat where they have been heard in previous years. Bill has been interested in cicadas since childhood and is very familiar with cicada life histories and distribution on Smith Island and the lower Eastern Shore.

As of this morning here in Southern Maryland, Tibicen chloromera, T. davisi and T. lyricen are calling during the morning hours. Only  T. lyricen has been heard in the evening near dusk. Where is T. auletes? Only 1 has been heard calling so far this summer!!! An occasional T. linnei has been heard, but not on a regular basis. The last Neocicada hieroglyphica was heard on August 3, the last full chorus was heard on July 24.

On the Eastern Shore of Maryland, Bill reports Tibicen chloromera and T. lyricen are heard during the morning hours, but very few T. davisi so far. Tibicen latisfasciata (which doesn’t occur outside of the Eastern Shore) are being heard locally where they occur. No T. linnei have been heard yet.

In Northeastern Maryland, Matthew is reporting Tibicen chloromera and T. lyricen, but no T. davisi (which may not occur north of the Fall Line in Maryland). In Central and Northern Maryland Tibicen winnemanna is a common species, but is limited to north of the Fall Line.

State: RI
County:
City:   Smithfield
Describe cicadas activity:   My son found a Cicada today on our deck.  We thought it was a giant horsefly at first.  I still have it in a jar.  It looks much like the pic at the top of this web page.  This is the first time we have ever seen a Cicada in the 14 years we have been here in Smithfield.
Other comments:    I am curious to know if this is part of the 17yr Cicada?  Are we likely to see many more this year?

ANNUAL CICADA SEASON SLOW TO BEGIN!!

6-30-09

As of this morning here in Southern Maryland, only Neocicada hieroglyphica can be heard calling from morning to evening, with an occasional T. lyricen in the evening near dusk. While a few individuals have been heard, Tibicen chloromera has yet to begin its daily morning presence.

On the Eastern Shore of Maryland, Bill is reporting Neocicada hieroglyphica in full swing, Tibicen lyricen and chloromera occasionally. He also reports the earliest Tibicen latisfasciata (which doesn’t occur in Southern Maryland) calling record he has ever had.

Tibicen davisi and auletes should start calling also very soon.

2009 Brood II stragglers Update:

May 20 Field Notes:

MAY 2009 UPDATE!!

Please report any Brood II (dark blue areas) Stragglers.

Since May 7, stragglers of the 17 year Periodical Cicada Brood II are being reported in St. Mary’s & Calvert counties, Maryland as well as many counties in central Virginia. These are straggling individuals of Brood II (see Brood Map) that will emerge in large numbers in 2013 in central Virginia and Southern Maryland (in the Middle Atlantic area). We would like to compare the level of emergence between this year 2009 and the regular emergence year in 2013. It is likely that if you have a few individuals this year in 2009, you will experience a larger abundant emergence in 2013. Please report any information and locations to us at this site as well as the Magicicada.org site:  http://magicicada.org (so they will show up on the map). Thanks.

Don’t forget that our Annual Cicadas will begin to emerge and sing around the middle of June until the first frost in October:

Describe cicadas activity:   Emerging cicadas - 100 or more so far - just around the house.  I haven\'t been in the yard and surrounding wooded area yet.  5-14-09
Other comments:    These are periodical cicadas, not the typical \"dog day\" cicadas which emerge every year in July & August.  I have about 15 nymphs, a few ready to molt.  I have close-up photos of the nymphs, when they mature, I will photograph them.  Please let me know if you want any pics.  They are in aquariums in my home which I use for beetle breeding and other critters.

Name:   Kyle
State:   MD
County:   St. Mary’s
City:   Hollywood
Location: Morgan Road
Describe cicadas activity:   I thought you guys might be interested to know that I observed several individual Periodical Cicadas at/around my home in Hollywood this past Saturday (5/9/09).  I saw the first one early on Saturday morning while birding for the May Count.  I watched through binoculars as a North Cardinal tried to eat it.  When he was through, I went to the spot and collected the cicada's wings, confirming the ID.  When I got home, my son showed me one that he found on our deck around mid-morning.  Later the same day, I found one barely still alive under my barbecue grill.  The bodies of all 3 insects were still fairly soft and moist, as if they had just recently emerged, although their wings were dry.
