I am in the northern area of Newport News and the damage is visible anywhere there are deciduous trees. The noise is tremendous.<\/p>\n<p>Comments: I don&#8217;t know if it is because we are a NWF backyard habitat or what but we always have them and this year it is ridiculous. They sing so loudly you cannot sleep. I apologize for not having GPS coordinates. Starts at sunset and goes through till just before sunrise. They are so loud you can barely hear the crickets in the background. \u00a0 They are loudest on humid nights. \u00a0 Tonight it is below 60 degrees and they are very quiet compared to the previous very warm nights in August.<\/p>\n<p>Comments: I was very interested in the cicadas this year because they are so much louder than last year (maybe it is the warmer weather?) Either way, it was nice to see a website devoted to them &#8211; I actually love the sound they make although it appears they are somewhat destructive. When I was little we use to tie my mother&#8217;s thread to them an let the fly around. We would also close them in the palm of our hands and play like we had an electric shaver. I&#8217;ve seen on alot of dead ones this summer on my carport.<\/p>\n<p>Comments: I noticed hornets flying with the Cicada in their grip. I was worried about the hornets only to find out that they are Cicada killers and are usually considered beneficial insects since they destroy plant feeding cicadas. Our cats bring them inside to play with them in large numbers. They are about the length of my thumb and personally we find these insects disgusting. They slowly creap across the carpet!! However, the cats find them thoroughly amusing, and they carry them in their mouths, wings flapping. Only a few of them make noise, and I wonder if only the males make the noises? Their din is about 50% of that of last year&#8217;s Brood X. I see cicadas flying to a different tree almost daily. Several cicadas landed on my back porch at night (apparently attracted to the light.)
