No sightings or skins but a flock of starlings is congregating on this corner also. This is a residential area just south of the Indiana State University campus. They seem to extend for two or three blocks surrounding this corner from what I can tell as I walk in the evening. This appears to be much louder than the normal singing I hear each year in this area. This area had a very low infestation of the last 17 year group in 2004 or 05.<\/p>\n Comments: Probably a normal situation but science proceeds from odd observations. I picked him up and he, after being a bit disconcerted, sat contentedly on my hand while I walked into the park. They start with the shake, rattle, and roll about 6:00 a.m., and don\u2019t’ stop for another 12 hours. Personally, I prefer fireflies, but thanks to construction and kids catching them for medical research, there are fewer each year.<\/p>\n Cicada Activity: INTENSE!!! I don’t think I’ve heard so many during a single summer.<\/p>\n Comments: I’m not a bug person, and they gross me out: but then, all bugs gross me out, and we have a bumper crop this year. Have noticed at least 2 cicadas flying in yard — beautiful. Can’t wait to see them again now so I can try to identify them.<\/p>\n Comments: Just discovering cicadas. Of course I am familiar with cicada songs — but didn’t ever know the casings and previously unidentified flying things were cicadas. Chorus activity not as loud. Population density of this emergence seems smaller than that noted in previous years.<\/p>\n Comments: The exact species is unknown to me… It is similar to that pictured at the top of your page, but the nose is blunter and the body is mostly black with dark brown patches on head and thorax, some dark green directly behind the eyes, which are black with slight green overtones. The abdomen is light gray. The wings are wider and folded more flatly across the back than that pictured, and are transparent with nearly florescent green veins; very beautiful! \u00a0 The body is ~1&1\/2″ long, 7\/16″ wide at thorax (widest), 3\/8″ at head, 3\/8″ at top of abdomen; tapering conically toward tail. The wings are ~2&1\/4″ long and ~3\/4″ wide at middle (widest point). There was evidence of fungal infection in the 4 specimens I noted, but did not appear severe enough to be sterilizing\/life threatening.<\/p>\n Please let me know if you can identify the species. \u00a0 I would be happy to provide a picture of a living individual (its wings are damaged though) if you can provide me with an address to which I can send it. Two to three days later a bug landed on our kitchen screen that was about the right size and shape so I was pretty sure it was what was scaring the horses. We were able to catch it and after going on the internet, decided it is a cicada, probably Tibicen (Harris) type. After hearing the recordings of their sound I recognized their sound as what we used to call heat bugs as a kid. \nComments: A cicada I have never heard. Starts with clucking that occur ever more quickly, then breaks into a machine-like tone with aggravating harmonics that sounds like a router\/planar. There is a very distinctive dip at the beginning of the tone, but it is otherwise very steady at about 2.5kHz. Have not found anything on the web like it anywhere. Any ideas?<\/p>\n

Most it’s leaves are eaten. Also, I see many holes on the ground.

But the cicada had beautiful wings like a clear satin. when the light reflected on to them it was like a shower of colours. beautiful i have to say.
