Seven species of cicadas are currently calling daily in Southern Maryland.<\/p>\n<p>As of this morning on the <strong>Eastern Shore<\/strong>, <u>Neocicada<\/u><u> hieroglyphica<\/u> is calling during the morning\/evening hours. Abundant <u>T. lyricen<\/u> and <u>T. chloromera<\/u> have been heard in the morning and in the evening near dusk with occasional <u>Tibicen<\/u><u> linnei<\/u> and <u>Tibicen<\/u><u> latisfasciata <\/u>during the afternoon hours. <u>Tibicen<\/u><u> auletes<\/u> is calling abundantly each evening until dusk. T. davisi has started calling in the am hours. Found an empty nymph body underside of a mailbox, and today, a dead adult body laying on our driveway&#8230;white powdery abdoment, dead.<br \/>\nOther comments:\u00a0Number of songs have increased since last weekend I was here.\u00a0 After a few adult songs last weekend, this weekend is continual, with no pause, in the trees lining our driveway.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Your description of a \u201cwhite powdery abdomen\u201d sounds like Tibicen chloromera, our Morning Cicada.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>7-23-10<\/strong><strong>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Garrett County, Maryland is very quiet when it comes to cicadas.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>While camping for three days last week at Herrington Manor State Park, outside of Oakland, Garrett county, Maryland, it was very noticeably quiet. There was no morning chorus of <u>T. chloromera<\/u> and <u>T. lyricen<\/u>. The only cicada heard during our three day stay was <u>Tibicen<\/u><u> canicularis<\/u>. T. canicularis called sporadically from around 9am to about 1:30pm. There was absolutely no cicada chorus at dusk. If you have a gas station\/convenience store near you that leaves it lights on all night long, take a look around before you go to sleep at night or early in the morning. These are the best times to find live cicadas that are attracted to the bright lights. Btw, the eggs are laid in the branches and would be difficult to find.) Good luck.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>7-17-10<\/strong><strong>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Cicada reports from Long Island\/Pine Barrens of New Jersey<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Elias reports: Tibicen auletes nymphs are coming up VERY slowly. Haven&#8217;t found one yet and only located two failed eclosions as I sent you. Went to Lakewood yesterday and caught 2 Neocicada at lights in addition to a male T lyricen. I was thrilled not to come home empty handed. The T. cannicularis are not coming up either (found a rare exuvia).<\/p>\n<p>Have you ever seen Neocicada eclosing? Wonder where to start looking for them. Most agree they are difficult to find.<\/p>\n<p>Yesterday I heard T. Chlormera sing in the Pine Barrens. I did not know they live there. That was the first time I heard chloromera there. So far the only species I haven&#8217;t heard was linnei.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><u> davisi<\/u> started calling Sat morning, July 17 here in Ridge, MD for the first time this season. This is almost a month after most of the other annual species have started calling. Very abundant are Lyricen mid-morning thru late-evening!<br \/>\nVery abundant are Latifasciata morning thru late-afternoon! Auletes calling occasionally in some locations mid-day but mainly in the mid to late evening! Not hearing much Linnei, I usually hear them mid-day thru late-afternoon!<br \/>\nAnd as for Hieroglyphica they seem to be more outside of their known colonies. Also very abundent this year!)<\/p>\n<p>(I also want to note that Diceroprocta is very abundent in Assateague\/Chincoteague this year.)<\/p>\n<p>As of this morning in <strong>North Central Maryland<\/strong>, abundant <u>Tibicen<\/u><u> chloromera<\/u> have been heard in the mornings and in the evenings near dusk with <u>Tibicen<\/u><u> linnei<\/u> and <u>Tibicen<\/u><u> lyricen.<\/u> (From Matt: \u201cThis week, I have been hearing tons of morning cicadas in the mornings, obviously, and afternoons. I have also been hearing\u00a0quite a few Lyric\u00a0and Linnie&#8217;s cicadas. The scissorgrinder cicada is the only annual cicada up here that\u00a0I have not heard yet.\u201d)<\/p>\n<p><strong>7-16-10<\/strong><strong> Cicada reports from Lakewood, New Jersey<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Elias reports: Made it down to Lakewood NJ and found 2 auletes that died while eclosing. One was on a pine sapling 3 inches from the ground. One was on 5 feet up on a pine tree.<\/p>\n<p>Hoping to find a nymph. Collected at lights and found an Imperial Moth but no cicadas. Hieroglyphica were calling at all times as well. We have seen them on\u00a0\u00a0 trees in our backyard and I saw one on the ground working its way to our picnic table where it was attempting to climb up the leg. I was concerned about my two dogs because they were watching it which drew my attention to seeing it also. I took dogs in house as I didn\\&#8217;t want them eating it. We hear them every year but I don\\&#8217;t remember seeing them as I have last summer and this one as well.<\/p>\n<p>Other comments:\u00a0 Last summer there were a lot of Cicads in the yard on the trees.\u00a0 I wonder what purpose they serve. I also wanted to ask you if the warm weather we have been having has a big effect on the amount of cicadas that come out of the ground. Last night I found about 10 cicada nymphs on the ground at once, which I think is a lot for\u00a0this early in the season. This was around 6:45pm.<\/p>\n<p>But at 8:30 I distinctively heard <strong><u>my<\/u><\/strong> <strong><u>first Tibicen lyricen. It was 81 degrees and he called<br \/>\nfor about 10 minutes. That is the earliest annual cicada I have ever<br \/>\nrecorded in a season and the only annual cicada heard in May. The previous earliest record in a season for Southern Maryland was<br \/>\nJune 5. I got a magicicada&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Got him just after he molted (white with just a black stripe across<br \/>\nthe back of his head).\u00a0 Within 2 hours, he is now all black\u2026.<br \/>\n3-year early Brood II??\u00a0 1-year early Brood XIX (doesn\u2019t make sense\u2014<br \/>\nwe don\u2019t get those, do we?)?
