Help us track and map out the occurrence of the 17 year Brood I Periodical Cicada in the Mid Atlantic area over the next 6 weeks. \u00a0If you live in or near the area outlined by the red box, please let us know whether or not you have observed any cicada activity (emerging adults, singing adults, etc). \u00a0Even if you were expecting some emergences and you haven\u2019t observed any, please report that also. \u00a0Negative reports are just as important as positive records in order to make the distribution maps complete! <\/strong><\/p>\n

The first occurrences of Brood I should show up now, with reports of full emergence and singing by May 15 to May 20.\u00a0 By the middle of June, most of the adults will have died off and the chorus will have ended. \u00a0Remember, by mid-June our annual cicada species will begin to emerge and start calling. Describe Cicadas activity:<\/strong> First solitary “buzz” just before July 4th. Singing has been loud all through August and coming from many parts of the neighborhood (wooded neighborhood, near creek; poplars,oaks,sycamores, maples, walnuts,pines). This week, 2 dead cicadas found and 1 live. Dead cicadas were intact (1 was in a spiderweb and 1 lying on the porch step). The live one landed on a brick window ledge 2 nights ago, when temp. dipped into 60s. Beautiful black with green and brownish markings. Dogday Harvestfly?<\/p>\n

Other comments:<\/strong> I’ve been wondering about the cool evening temperatures, and how they effect the cicada. Was wondering whether the warmth of the brick window casement attracted the bug? Or possibly the floodlight on the side of the building, reflecting off the brick?<\/p>\n

Describe Cicadas activity:<\/strong> I am so SICK of these bugs and the Cicada killer Wasps. The wasps have taken over my yard for at least the past 3 Summers. When I get up in the morning, I see HUGE piles of sand because they have created underground tunnels, and have been digging at night. I NOW have so many areas in my lawn and driveway where they have been digging. I have been putting doen ant dust, bleach, and have been using wasp & hornet spray.<\/p>\n

Other comments:<\/strong> My MAIN issue and QUESTION is: Exactly how long is their season ? It is now August 16th, and they have not yet left my yard or neighborhood. HELP! HELP! I live in a western suburb of Detroit. One of my friends who lives in an eastside suburb of Detroit, thinks I am nuts and says she has never seen these things in her city or neighborhood. I’m not an expert) for about 10-15 minutes around 1:30 on a fairly hot day, then both stopped about the same time. Other comments:<\/strong> I have lived here at Abbottsfield in North Reading center on the Ipswich river for 50 years and have listened to the large arboreal cicadas during that time,they have been absent some years but most years they are in full song during the summer daylight hours along the river and woodland paths on the property. Today my neices 5 + 4 years old found a giant one clinging to the window sash of a large many windowed sun room and brought it to me, it had the 3 jewel crown and gleaming gold wings and body shimmer on the moss green body color,it was exhausted but intact it seems to have fled from a bird to the safety of the house leaving it in full sunlight, the girls mother misted it with water it revived but it fell out of a potted palm. After letting the great bug rest it livened and wished to go out so to the river and onto a giant maple where it blended perfectly with the bark and moss color as it climbed back to its kingdom.We took a photograph this was a really large cicada and totally unconcerned being with us a fascinating summer encounter<\/p>\n
