Name: Matthew Wittmer
State: Utah
County: Wayne
City: SW of Horseshoe Canyon Unit, a
Location: Bluejohn canyon
GPS Coordinates: N 38 degrees, 24.300′ / W 110
Describe Cicadas activity: Heard what I believe to be Okanagana tanneri at 5am before sunlight coming from the depths of Bluejohn canyon when I was camped atop the ridge that drops into the canyon near the mouth of the slot about 600 feet from the canyon lip. Found specimens that closely resemble this holotype in the San Rafael desert scrub area along the two-track path that goes east and slightly north off of Lower San Rafael Road from mile marker pole #1148. This two-track is about 2 miles NW of the canyon slot entrance where I heard the songs in the early morning hours. I heard them right above the location where hiker Aron Ralston was pinned in 2003. The specimen I found along the two-track road resemble tanneri as per Fig. 188 in the monograph “The Cicadas of North American North of Mexico” by Sanborn and Heath. This book is published by the Entomological Society of America. The markings and colour on back if specimens I found are the same as fig 188 in the book; eyes are positioned similarly in juxtaposition of the body contour as well. At first I thought these cicadas to be Okanagana rimosa, but upon digging further and finding this book that appears to be the definative guide to cicada of North America, the cicada I found match the tanneri pic in that book. I also spotted many nymph shells along the sand terrain as well in that area. The annotation there says tanneri specimen they found was in Emery county which is just nine miles north of Wayne county boarder where I found and heard these cicada on July 28-30, 2015. I’ve yet to find a recording of tanneri, but what I heard was a monotone hum, with a rhythmic skipping in the tone like a scratch in a record every second or slightly less.
Other comments: Please email me any link to a known audio recording of Okanagana tanneri if you know of one.

Monday August 31, 2015 03:42:3

Name: Bob Serio
State: Maryland
County: Baltimore County
City: Catonsville area
Location: 2 mi. west of SW Baltimore Cit
GPS Coordinates: ??
Describe Cicadas activity: On the 10+ acre well forested campus where I live, the annual cicada presence seems louder and more plentiful than usual. They can be heard all day from sunrise to sundown, and they can be seen, usually dead or dying on the sidewalk, but not infrequently perched very much alive and active on tree leaves and branches. Only rarely are they seen in flight.
Other comments: It took my inquisitive Labrador Retriever just a day or so after the insects emerged in large numbers to figure out that they are good to eat. He uses his acute sense of smell to locate them on the ground and dispatches them quickly with a crunch and a quick swallow. This reminds me of of the last emergence of the 17-year brood in this area (in 2004?). My two Labs at the time also figured out pretty quickly that cicadas were good to eat. They not only scarfed them up off the ground and low branches, but, as cicadas were flying thick and heavy at the time, the dogs made sport of snatching them out of the air: whenever they flew close enough to catch, the dogs downed them in a flash. Laissez les bon temps roulez!

Name: Amanda
State: Virginia
County: Richmond City
City: Richmond
Location: Backyard
GPS Coordinates:
Describe Cicadas activity: Shockingly heavier in our yard than in years past, including the emergence of the 17 yr brood a few years back! Lived here for ten years and never seen this much activity, but might have something to do with fact we’re the only house with trees left in our yard!
Other comments: I live in the city of Richmond and I sought out info after finding a second and wholly different cicada in our yard (just emerged from shell) than the ones we’ve found in our yard so far this summer. My girls and I found quite a few shells in our yard/deceased cicadas beginning in early July. (Black with the red eyes). However we just stumbled upon a 100% green cicada that emerged from its shell right before our eyes. As with my nearby neighbor in Henrico County, they’re singing up a storm these days.

Describe Cicadas activity: Heard a strange noise in the middle of the street. Looked over to see the little guy somersaulting on the street as if a car had hit it, but it was clearly alive. It went silent and I ran out and picked it up. It seemed to be ok, albeit stunned, and I placed it in a shady spot under a tree with a raised surround so a dog couldn’t pee on it or step on it. City livin’.

If there can be 1.5 million cicadas on an acre and we have 6 acres, this means millions of cicadas. The property behind us is 30 acres so that means tens of millions of cicadas.
