2016 Cicada Season Reports

Date: 2016-09-08 23:17:39
Name: Dawn Isis
State: Maryland
County: Montgomery
City: Silver Spring
Location: 8608 Lanier Drive – about .25
GPS Coordinates:
Describe Cicadas activity: I have been visiting here since August 9. The cicadas were very loud. More recently I have found many dead cicadas laying around, on the front porch, on the ground, etc. Some look like the actual live bug, others are all brown and seem like a skeleton or a layer that has been shed.
Other comments: Cannot find anything online about this – all reports are from spring 2016 and say there will not be a Cicada emersion in the D.C. area this year. Was unable to read what appeared to be a Sept. 4 story in the Washington Post about them.

State: Illinois
County: Cook
City: Chicago
Location: North Center (neighborhood)
GPS Coordinates:
Describe Cicadas activity: Okay, it’s been crazy over here in August into September, 2016. These guys are DEAFENING this year, and there are A LOT of them. (I was around for the last 17 year emergence, and this racket comes close, if not equal). Dead ones pretty common on sidewalks, grass throughout the summer, but singles, not heaps. I came on line thinking maybe I’d missed word of cyclics emerging this year in Chicago, but doesn’t appear any are due. The (dead) ones I’ve seen seem to be annual – dark in color, silvery wings, no red eyes. But boy, there are a lot of them, and they are LOUD.

County: Wisconsin
City: La Crosse
Location: French Island
GPS Coordinates:
Describe Cicadas activity: A lot of noise. Maple Tree has much damage.
Other comments: I’m not completely sure what kind of Cicada we have, I’ve lived in this home for 3 years and this is the first time I’ve seen the shed. I have not seen the flying cicada. I wish we had known to watch for them – as it appears our Maple Tree might not make it!

Describe Cicadas activity: 9-2-2016 I saw two live ones around my front step, each at separate times and on separate days. That’s it. I hear them quite loudly at night in the trees behind our house in the woods. Very annoying but I thought we would have been inundated by now. 9-4-2016, 3:42 p.m. — I just heard them now buzzing in the trees in the woods — first time in daylight.
